PRE-PAID WATER AND STILL A LOSS OF R6-MILLION

The Status Quo report for Mafube Local Municipality (MPM) recently published by National Treasury, confirms the lack of financial management, oversight and leadership that is rampant. One of the most shocking findings is that, according to the financial statements for the 2021/22 financial year, the municipality suffered a financial loss of R 6 192 881.00 for water supply. This is despite the R15 million that was spent on prepaid water meters. Anyone who remembers the water meter saga will know that Mafube Business Forum (MBF) was and remain strongly opposed to this ill-conceived project. MBF warned that the promised income from water sales would not materialize and in our opinion it could be better used to improve the water infrastructure. 1476 Meters that were basically working were replaced with the prepaid meters, while there are still more than 2,000 households where there are no meters in place.

The SQ report further shows that as much as 42% of water received by MPM is lost due to lack of control measures to combat distribution losses of already-purified water. Losses increased from R 44 020 101.67 in the financial year 2021, to R46 403 741.36 in 2022. Surprisingly then, while MPM suffer huge losses with water supply services, officials and politicians are convinced that they can operate the electricity supply network!
