A relatively neat and new pumping station near Geelhout Street in Frankfort is unused and sewage runs directly into the river. The reason for this is because the power cable that supplies the station with electricity was stolen about two years ago - the cable is not even 5 meters long, but has not been replaced to date. However, the Geelhout pump station is not the only source of concern...
The larger pumping station, Namahadi Pumping Station, also has sewage flowing directly into the stream that serves the Wilge River. As is widely known, water flows from the Wilge River to the Vaal Dam which, among other things, supplies Gauteng with water. Not only is our own water polluted, but also the rest of the river's water and eco-system.
Officials from DWS from Pretoria accompanied MBF today and visited several pumping stations in the Mafube area. They will launch a full report with findings.
